Designing a Floorcloth

Placement: Where will the floorcloth go?

Floorcloths can be used anywhere in the house, though, not really on top of a carpet.

Some common places where floorcloths are a great fit

  • The kitchen sink or counter
  • In front of the tub/shower or under the sink
  • Under your pet’s eating/water bowls
  • As a hallway runner
  • Under the dining table
  • On a coffee table as a runner or placemat
  • Under a baby’s highchair
  • In place of a door mat
  • Any place you would put a rug or floor mat.

Size

You may already know the size you want.  If not, you may have an existing small rug or mat you want to replace and that size is good.  A towel can be a good tool to help determine size.  Laid out flat or folded to fit, It gives a good visual.

Design and Colors

Take a browse through my gallery.  You’ll see lots of design ideas and colors.  These mats are all available, I would make the mat to order.  You might have a pattern you love that you want to see on the mat.  Share that with me and I’ll let you know if I can reproduce it.  This could be a fabric, (curtains), or a tile pattern, or a wallpaper pattern, (these I use a lot).  You may have ideas on what you want but, need to see some pictures first.  I can sketch out images on paper, it’s another good way to get a visual.  Working together is really fulfilling for both parties.

The Finish

When all the paint work is done, after I’ve fine tuned everything, I begin the process of applying 5 coats of Clear Satin Floor Poly.  This makes the mat quite durable, (your wood floor probably has 3 coats). On the bottom I paint on Liquid Rubber, this will hold the mat in place so it will not move around.  It also adds considerable heft and weight.

Cleaning

To clean your new floorcloth, use a very mild liquid cleanser. I dilute white vinegar in mild soapy water and use a soft scrubby sponge.

Pricing

Prices can vary greatly from one floorcloth to another. Size, number of colors and pattern determine the price. A 2ft x 3ft mat with 2-3 colors and simple design can start at $300.00. A 2ft x 4ft mat may start at $400.00. I try to keep pricing as close to $50 per square foot. Of course the larger, more complex and multi-colored floorcloths will rise in price. For shipping, I roll the floorcloth up in protective plastic foam sheeting and put in a heavy duty cardboard tube. When it arrives at your house, unroll it and just let it relax back to it’s flat state.
